Delivering recycled water to Chisholm from 6 May 2019

From 6 May 2019 we will supply recycled water to 355 homes in Chisholm. These homes were fitted with dual water/recycled water systems when they were constructed, enabling them to meet BASIX requirements.

*Residents of Thornton North: if you have a purple water meter we will contact you over coming months. Your suburb will continue to receive drinking water through your recycled water system until further notice.

Recycled water is treated to a high level and must comply with Australian Guidelines for Water Recycling and the requirements of NSW Health. Recycled water is suitable for flushing toilets, washing cars, watering gardens and machine washing clothes. It must not be used for drinking, cooking, bathing, or filling swimming pools.

    Recycled water

    We’ve had some technical complications with the operation of the newly-constructed recycled water treatment plant for Chisholm. This means we have not yet been able to complete the transition to recycled water from drinking water.

    The complications with operating the plant have not affected the safety or quality of water supplied through the drinking and recycled water networks. We are working to bring the recycled water system online as soon as possible.

    You will receive a letter from us in the next day or so with more information.

    Recycled water

    Please remember it’s important to always use the water supplied through your recycled water taps for recycled water purposes only:

    • Toilet flushing
    • Washing cars, paths and external walls
    • Watering lawns and gardens, including fruit trees and vegetable gardens
    • Washing laundry in a washing machine
    • Watering pets

    Save your 4

    As well as complying with water restrictions, there are some simple ways to save water:

    • Take a 4 minute shower
    • Wait for a full load before putting on the washing
    • Fix dripping taps
    • Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth.

    If we do this, we can save 4 buckets of water each day. If we all change a little, we can save a lot. This will really help conserve the water remaining in our dams.

    Planning for our water future

    We are currently working with the NSW Government, key stakeholders and the community to develop the next Lower Hunter Water Plan, which will consider new water sources and new ways to reduce water use.

    Understanding how the community feels about the options to supplement existing water supplies and reduce reliance on drinking water is an important part of preparing this plan.

    Next steps for Chisholm residents

    There will be some water supply shutdowns before commissioning of the recycled water systems occurs. We’ll let you know when these will occur, and try to minimise the inconvenience to you.

  • Level 1 water restrictions are in place from Monday 16 September 2019

    We have the lowest water levels in our dams in over two decades. We need everyone’s help to save water.

    Water restrictions don’t apply to water supplied through the recycled water system, but please use this water wisely. The water supplied through both systems are valuable resources.

    What you need to know about level 1 water restrictions:

    • Outdoor watering before 10am or after 4pm only
    • No hosing hard surfaces
    • Wash your vehicle on the grass using a trigger nozzle
    • No sprinklers

  • All Home Plumbing Inspections completed - thank you for your cooperation

    Over the past few weeks we've finished the last few Home Plumbing Inspections. All 1,100 properties in Chisholm and Gillieston Heights have now been checked.

    We know it was a little inconvenient having our plumbers check inside your home. We would like to thank all the home owners, tenants and property managers who helped coordinate access for us. Thank you very much!

    Over the past few weeks we've finished the last few Home Plumbing Inspections. All 1,100 properties in Chisholm and Gillieston Heights have now been checked.

    Some technical difficulties have delayed the project and we would prefer not to introduce a new water source during the hottest months of the year. Recycled water will be provided on 6 May 2019. Until then you will continue to receive drinking water through your recycled water pipes and meter (purple).

    Home plumbing inspections have now been been completed on 97% of homes in Chisholm and 88% of homes in Gillieston Heights. We would like to thank the property owners, tenants and real estate agents who have helped achieve this great result. It is good to see so much support for the introduction of recycled water.

    All homes need to have the free home plumbing inspection before recycled water is introduced. The inspection is to ensure there are no interconnections between the drinking water pipes and the recycled water pipes at the home. It will also ensure all fittings are in...

    All homes need to have the free home plumbing inspection before recycled water is introduced. The inspection is to ensure there are no interconnections between the drinking water pipes and the recycled water pipes at the home. It will also ensure all fittings are in place and recycled water taps and fittings are colour coded and labelled. This is to reduce to chance of occupants of the property accidentally using recycled water instead of potable (drinking quality) water for drinking, cooking, bathing.

    Hunter Water has engaged a local communications firm, Mara Consulting, to help us contact the last few residents and book in their home plumbing inspections. If you haven't contacted us as yet, representatives from Mara Consulting will call you or knock on your door over the next week or two. The representatives will carry photo identification and a letter of introduction from Hunter Water. They do not need to enter your house. Mara Consulting has a great deal of experience working with community members on major projects so we are sure you will be in capable hands.

    Thank you for your patience and understanding during testing of the recycled water mains over the past week. This testing was in preparation for providing recycled water to customers in coming weeks. Residents in Chisholm will be the first residential customers in the Hunter to receive recycled water from an embedded main supply.

    Special thanks to the residents who contacted us with feedback and concerns. Each contribution provides more insight and knowledge for us to better deliver a smooth customer experience for you. Some residents contacted us to report discoloured water and this helped us pinpoint sections of water mains to flush - meaning clear water was again available throughout the system before the peak customer demand period.

    Discoloured water cannot be entirely prevented as it is due to changes in water pressure when the water mains are emptied and refilled. Water discolouration is an aesthetic, rather than a health concern, however, we advise you not to drink or wash clothes in discoloured water.

    We invite you to continue to let us know of your water supply experience by calling 1300 657 657 as this will help with mains flushing if required.

    There will be an interruption to the water supply from 10pm on Thursday 4 October until 4am on Friday 5 October.

    Please accept our apologies for this inconvenience. This work is required to allow us to test our water mains in preparation for providing recycled water from the Morpeth Recycled Water Treatment Plant.

    If this water interruption will affect your property you were advised by letter sent 27 September 2018.

    *We will confirm if another interruption will occur on Sunday 7 October, from 10pm until 4am on Monday 8 October.

    Hunter Water has appointed H L Mullane to complete the home inspections for approximately 350 customers in Chisholm. These homes will begin receiving recycled water later in 2018. The home inspections are to ensure the recycled water plumbing system at each home is in good condition and there are no 'cross connections' with the drinking water supply.

    Mullane is one of the largest specialised contracting companies in NSW and employs more than 230 people. The company has been providing gas, plumbing, drainage, roofing and electrical services to Hunter customers since 1925, and has provided services to Hunter Water for more...
