Supporting development during COVID-19

We recognise this is a very challenging time for people and businesses, but we're here to continue to support development across the Lower Hunter. To make it easy and safe to do business, we've implemented the following work practises:

  • Our office-based Development Services team is working normally, but from home, to support application processing and design reviews.
  • Our field staff are supporting construction activities by ensuring site inspections and commissioning’s are occurring as scheduled.
  • Online application lodgement is available 24/7 through our new website.
  • Processing and outputs are generated electronically and emailed to you.
  • Face-to-face meetings have been replaced with video conferencing
  • Limited counter services are available at Head Office by appointment only.

Development Forum postponed until October 2020

Hunter Water’s Development Forum has been deferred until October 2020 due to the COVID-19 social distancing practices. We are considering changing the format of the event to a ‘Webinar’ style event. Keep an eye out for invitations later this year.

The themes of this year's forum will relate to supporting growth and regional development in a post COVID-19 economy and our continued work in responding to drought.

We look forward to seeing you there. In the meantime, if there is anything particular you would like to hear anything from us, please contact our Development Services team and let us know.

Roll out of a new water quality standard

In consultation with the industry, we have developed a new Standard Technical Specification (STS 408) that sets out the required hygienic construction and handling practices for repair and installation of new water mains. This new standard will help ensure the ongoing safe supply of drinking water to our customers and sets out the water quality parameters to be met.

The new Standard was finalised in December 2019 and will be implemented after the e-learning training module becomes available. We anticipate the e-learning training will be available from May with full implementation from July 2020.

Find more information on the new standard here.

Developer round table discussions

As part of our ongoing improvement of the Certification of Developer Works, we are continuing to review our processes, approved products and complex works interactions.

We will be holding a series of round table discussions with Accredited Suppliers in May and June to seek feedback on what is working well and what needs improvement, as well as the new STS-408 Standard and how approved products are being managed.

Be on the lookout for an invite to one of our online discussion forums.

Approved products

The Water Services Association Australia (WSAA) appraises the suitability of civil products for use in water and sewer networks across Australia. WSAA provides this service as part of the suite of activities and resources provided to Hunter Water.

From 30 June 2020, we will no longer keep a register of Hunter Water specific approved products, instead we will allow WSAA appraised products to be used within our network provided they meet our design codes and specifications.

It remains the Accredited Suppliers responsibility to ensure that acceptable products are being used in our networks. Please contact our representatives (Cameron Onions, Murray Melmeth, Shane Hayter or Brett Passmore), if you have any questions about the suitability of WSAA appraised products.
