Our recycling initiatives

Consultation has concluded

Hunter Water has recycled 6,454 million litres of wastewater during 2017-2018. This represents more than 10 percent of the total amount of wastewater generated by our region, and plans are in place to recycle more in the near future.

We also have a range of recycled water schemes in place, which supply high quality treated wastewater to large commercial customers for industrial use, as well as to local golf clubs and farmers for irrigation.

Using recycled water helps conserve our precious resource. For every litre of recycled water used, a litre of drinking water is saved. It is also largely unaffected by weather, meaning it is a reliable water source which can be accessed all year round, even during dry conditions.

This achievement builds on a previous great water recycling result reflected in the National Performance Report 2016-17 by the Bureau of Meteorology, which ranked Hunter Water sixth nationally amongst major water utilities for total recycled water supplied.

New recycling initiatives include a project to increase onsite recycling at our treatment plants that will recycle an additional 140 ML per year. Hunter Water is also close to completing work on two residentialdual-reticulation recycled water schemes in Gillieston Heights and Chisholm.

Our current initiatives

  • We’ve teamed with Plastic Police to recycle our soft plastics into outdoor furniture

  • We reuse and recycle 60% of the excess soil from our maintenance jobs

  • We use crushed recycled glass instead of sand and other bedding materials for pipe embedment

  • We have arrangements with an accredited eWaste recycler

  • We reuse of 100% biosolids from our treatment plants

  • We buy recycled products – all of our printing is done on recycled paper
