Recycled water will soon be supplied to residents in Thornton North with recycled water (purple) meters. These customers have been receiving drinking water through their recycled water pipes.

Construction of the new 2km recycled water pipeline from Chisholm to Thornton North is now complete with testing and commissioning now underway. Only properties inside the already approved recycled water precinct will be connected to the recycled water network. These properties will already have recycled water plumbing installed. This project is an extension of the scheme which provides recycled water to approximately 1,000 customers in Chisholm and Gillieston Heights. It is part of our program to reduce unnecessary use of drinking water and meet the future water needs of our community. Homes with recycled water use on average 40% less drinking water each year.

  • Testing for cross-connections underway

Thank you for your ongoing patience as we progress with works to introduce recycled water to your home and 40 others in Thornton North. Unfortunately, further delays in finalising customer plumbing compliances and operational difficulties have pushed the connection back to October 2021. However, we are continuing to work closely with NSW Health to test and review the system and will provide more information on the connection date closer to the time.

As part of our preparations to introduce recycled water, we need to undertake work on the pipeline to remove any cross connections within the water and recycled water network.

    What should I expect?

The interruption is for your recycled water system, this means recycled water will not be available for toilet flushing, outside taps and to your washing machine. (To use your toilet during the interruption, you may like to fill a bucket and use it to ‘flush’ your toilet.) There will be no disruption to your drinking water connection.

    The interruption will occur:

    • Tuesday 8 June 2021 from 4pm until 6am the following day
    • Thursday 10 June 2021 from 4pm until 6am the following day

Possible changes in water colour after the work

Once the water supply to the recycled water network is re-established, it’s possible you may notice some discoloured water in both the drinking and recycled water systems, which is due to sediment dislodging inside the pipes. Discoloured water is not considered a health concern, however, if your washing machine is connected to the recycled water network (via a purple fitting) we suggest you do not wash clothes until the water runs clear.

If you notice cloudy or discoloured water, you should run a tap for a few minutes. Hunter Water will have work crews checking for discoloured water, and will flush the mains if necessary. If you run your taps, and your water still appears cloudy or discoloured, please contact Hunter Water on 1300 657 657.

We are currently working with customers to address cross-connections.

If your home has been deemed non-compliant you will receive a letter in the coming weeks outlining the defects to be rectified by a licensed plumber. This work will need to be completed by 5 February 2021 ready for connection in March 2021.

We will be in touch in March 2021 regarding a more accurate connection date for customers.
